I am having the same issue. Tried new battery and new cache board and mix of each, old with new, also new with old. All combinations equal no joy! I can configure RAID 0 with bad battery state. I believe I can reconfigure as RAID 5 (without caching, but there will be a perfomance hit) if I do fresh.

I would've recommend to verify the Firmware on your controller and if it's out of date to upgrade it to the latest version and wait for at least 72hrs and re run the ADU. But, if you keep having the error msg after that to go ahead and replace the battery. After that you don't need to make any other changes.

Cheers!
FYI:Also verify how many batteries you'r controller is currently supporting :D

If you don't replace the battery, it may not have enough charge to support the cache if there's a power failure. If the system detects the battery is dead, it may disable the cache altogether until the charge level comes back up, this can have a severe impact on your I/O rates.

I agree with the rest, verify your firmware is up to date first, sometimes the new firmware has better verification/management on charging the battery. remember to wait 72 hours to give the system enough time to trickle-charge the battery.

If you do have to replace the battery, it will be connected to the cache module with a few easy to release clips. Just power down the server (properly of course), remove the cache module from the system, and swap out the batteries. It can take up to 72 hours for the battery to get back to full charge.

If you like, HP offers a page where you can view most server models, and how to replace/remove many parts in them at http://h20464.www2.hp.com/index.html

Here's a direct link to the process to get the cache module out: http://h20464.www2.hp.com/results.htm?SID=1121586&MEID=8B57711E-5E25-479C-9F6A-BE5916307139

Hope this helps.

Jade: I think there are more than one battery cell inside the battery pack and that one of them is faulty. You replace the whole battery pack (one spare part). I would not advise you to try to replace individual cells inside there, unless you know what you're doing.

Or do you actually have two battery packs connected to the controller?

I am just wondering - would it be easiest to just replace the whole battery-backed write cache? If so, do I need to rebuild the array after or will there be any configuration involved?

I know very little about server hardware management.

Thanks.

Hello,

no - you have to replace only the battery module - it is clipped behind the cache module. It is easy to remove from the cache module. After clipping in the new battery you put the cache module back in place on the controller - close the server and power it up.

If you have too much money to spend you can also replace the complete BBWC module with battery :-) but as said befor - you should not ;-)

The battery will be charged and the controller will then reenable the write cache. That's all - no need to change config or array settings.

Regards

Robert

Okay, I have replaced the battery, rebooted the server and waiting a few days to see if that battery just needed to charge.

I am still getting the same message.

Do I need to reboot again to be able to see that the battery has been charged? Is there something else that I need to do to get it to recognize the new battery?

I have replaced both the battery and battery backed cache card. I have installed the latest firmware.

I am still getting this error message.

Any ideas on what else to try?
