I haven't tried 16.04, SLES 12 generally defaults to 1900x1200 on Gen9 servers

Using a current linux distribution (Ubuntu 16.04 in my case), is it possible to use a screen resolution larger than 1024x768 with the on-board Matrox G200eH2 graphics? (Current X server versions don't seem to provide appropriate support for the Matrox controller.) If so, how? If not, can I just use a different PCIe graphics card? (Based on what I have read so far this doesn't seem to be possible...)

Is it using the vesa driver or is the mga driver still functional in SLES 12?

I am able to get a better resolution using the mga driver, but graphics performance is pretty sluggish then (apparently due to XAA having been removed from current X server releases)...
