mixed mode (hba and raid) is available with newer controllers and per channel only. the layout of the disk is different in different modes, hence the new format.

i have a functional test system on a Proliant DL380 G9. The DL380 is currently in HBA mode, meaning HDD connected to it will bypass the internal smart Array P840.

I would like to test this system using the internal P840, but i do not want to recreate the whole system again.

currently, when i reboot into smart storage setting and enable the P840, i get a warning of loosing all data on existing HDD. is there a way around this?

Hi m8,

As I am aware once array will start work in a raid mode it will need to reformat drives and put ourself pointers for data.

Regards,

Piotr

thanks... but isn't there any "mixed" mode type where i can choose whether to use that p840 on an HDD or not?

it seems too captivating to have all HDD go thru it?

during setup, it says that you can configure it in mixed mode. however, when i go to the configuration screen i only have 2 options. HBA or RAID.

am i missing something that will enable the mixed mode? or is it a subset of the RAID mode?

Hi m8,

Could you check in specs? I can see 840 only supports HBA or RAID. If you have another array controller on the motheboard you could make one work in RAID mode and second one in HBA.

http://www.intelligentservers.co.uk/content/HP-Smart-Array-P840-4GB-FBWC-12Gb-2-ports-Int-SAS-Controller-726897-B21-761880-001.pdf

Regards,

Piotr

"Newer" means Gen10 Controllers.

https://www.hpe.com/h20195/v2/getpdf.aspx/a00017196enw.pdf?ver=3.0

1 or 2 Gen9 controllers can do mixed mode too.

It means, the controller can do HBA mode at one channel, RAID mode at another channel - so this cannot be done in a single disk box, because this is a single channel.
