Hello,

the battery FW cannot be updated. You may try updating the controller FW, but most probably the battery needs to be replaced.

Sorry to necro this thread, but I'm running across the same thing, and the linked document doesn't provide much insight into the issue. That's only suggesting that a discharged battery will show failed. Mine seems to be the opposite. No problem reported initially, but after leaving the servers on for a couple of days, it shows failed.

OP asked why the firmware was different, is it simply due to the different spare number?

I have a pair of DL380 Gen9 here with the same issue. One reporting firmware 2.1 is failed (871264-001), one reporting 1.1 is good (815983-001). Same part numbers are on the battery itself, but different spare numbers reported through iLO. I read somewhere else that the preferred spare number for Gen9 servers is 815983-001, so that checks out with the one that is working. Are there any other platforms affected by this? if 871264-001 are truly useless in Gen9 servers, what are they good in?

One last (important) question, all of these batteries I have show 878463-001 on the label, but in the system they're showing as different spare numbers. Is there a reliable way to tell them apart based on just a physical inspection? Will post again if I come up with something myself.

Rule of thumb - older models that may fail have a green color, newer models have a blue color.

A common part# for the new model is 878643-001 , but they may vary due to different cable lenght etc.

See

https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=a00040078en_us&docLocale=en_US

I did learn something about my specific situation, we ran across some re-celled battery modules, which were obviously re-soldered with new cells, then slapped into whichever shell they happened to have lying around, hence our part number mismatch, I assume anyway. Thanks!
