Hi .. im racking my head and cant find this error.

Have smartupdate installed on linux.

# smartupdate --s --target my.ip.addy --targettype oa --username user --password pass --use_location /var/tmp/spp --dryrun

Error: Cannot get a valid session. Please check whether the server is running.
Sending Shutdown request to engine
Shutdown post command failed: 2

Have you checked by using force option.

#smartupdate --s --f --target my.ip.addy --targettype oa --username user --password pass --use_location <baseline_directory_path>

I figured it out .. i had isut running. Once I stopped that it worked.
