Hallo,

could someone help me, I bought new DL20 and the fans are still on 38% speed.

I use Legacy Bios Mode for Ubuntu 3rd party SSD, but in UEFI is the same speed.

The sound is really terrible.

if you install SSD PCIE or M.2 NVME slot without HPE logo , the system couldn't read NVME SSD temp value, will set fan to 43% speed all the time.

I meet the problem in before, After I get a used nvme SSD with HPE logo (seagate 960G) ，model VK000xxxxx , system work fine without fan noise. But the hpe 960G NVME price like double than retail verion 960G NVME SSD.

Suggest you check your linux OS install HPE Agentless Management software (AMS) and ILO driver. Any OS need install ilo driver and Agentless Management software to send message to mother board ilo chipset, that could share temperature or CPU load info to mother board. And ilo system will lower the fan speed and noise.

The third mgf sata/SAS SSD/HDD shouldn't be problem for most case. Only the NVME/PCIE SSD need use HPE parts to read temperature value, or without it, system will use higher speed fan all the time.

Hi,

I have now resolved my problem and want to share the solution. i ll make it simple so everyone can follow as i struggled following suggestions in other posts.

everything was solved after installing this https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/rn/vsphere-esxi-70u2a-release-notes.html

Download above file

Use the datastore browser in esxi and upload this file in one of your datastores

connect to esxi using ssh

use the following command to install :
esxcli software vib install -d /vmfs/volumes/d1_os/HPE-702.0.0.10.7.0.52-May2021-Addon-depot.zip
(replacing "d1_os" with your volume name)

restart esxi and wait 5 mins.

enjoy the silence

The problem was originally caused as I installed esxi 7 from vmware directly and did not use the custom HPE image. After i followed some tips in the forum, I realized i am missing many vibs needed, by hpe.

Updating the firmware of the server, updating the iLo, installing Ams, restarting amsd, restarting.installing cim or restarting related services, or installing ilo vib and many other things mentioned in similar posts, DO NOT fix the fan problem

Installing the above package fixes the problem reducing the fan from 38-40 % to about 6% when operating.

I suspect the fix has to do with the vib about the controller that reports the hdd temperature.

note that i dont have SSD drived, just normal hp bought drives. I dont think this has to do with the drives at all, rather than vib that reads information from the controller.. The above package installes many vibs by hpe, in effect converting your original esxi installation to a custom esxi by hpe installation.

<LI-EMOJI id="lia_slightly-smiling-face" title=":slightly_smiling_face:"></LI-EMOJI>
