Hi, my server does not boot anymore, red light flashing.

ilo 4 shows me the error:

"8"," Critical","Power","01/01/1970 00:01","06/17/2021 02:49","3","System Power Fault Detected (XR: 10 00 MID: FF F5 FE 01 FF FF FF 06 06 00 00 02 00 05 80 40 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00)",

The servers does not even try to start: after pressing start button it just shows green for seconds before going back to amber. I do not hear any noise (like fan).

What does this error mean? Which part is affected according to error message address?

Thanks in advance

Hi,

thank you. I downloaded and extracted cp046467.exe, then I flashed ilo to the latest version.

Now, I also want to update HPE System ROM and SL/XL Chassis Firmware (which includes power management I think).

I want to install these firmware updated using ilo interface.

In cp046467.exe I could find ilo4_278.bin file, which I used for flashing ilo. This worked.

But where can I find *.B18 file for BIOS and *.hex file for power management controller?

This is my hardware:

Product Name

ProLiant MicroServer Gen8

UUID

33323137-3731-5A43-3135-323130334E54

Server Serial Number

<STRIKE>confidential info erased</STRIKE>

Product ID

712317-421

System ROM

J06 11/09/2013

System ROM Date

11/09/2013

Backup System ROM

J06 11/09/2013

Integrated Remote Console

HTML5 .NET Java Web Start

License Type

iLO Advanced

iLO Firmware Version

OK.

I successfully flashed my firmware like this:

"ID","Severity","Class","Last Update","Initial Update","Count","Description",
"10","Informational","System Revision","09/02/2021 10:52","09/02/2021 10:52","1","Firmware flashed (ProLiant System BIOS - J06 04/04/2019)",
"9","Informational","System Revision","08/31/2021 09:52","08/31/2021 09:52","1","Firmware flashed (iLO 4 2.78)",

Should this be sufficient? Or is some other firmware file missing?

Still, the server does not boot at all, flashing red light.

What potential root cause to check next?

Hi,

unfortunately, HP does not allow me to install full SPP due to warrenty / support restrictions.

But I am allowed to download single firmware files und flash through ilo upload. This is why I sent you the updated version numbers.

1st question: Is the foirmware now up to date? Is something missing?

2nd question: Using the error code / error address I posted before, can you rule out other root causes such as e.g. defect fan? Does it really point to system board?

3rd question: When I am going to replace system board I need to copy/restore bios settings like for raid controller to get the server running. If I do so, will it format my disks due to new bios settings? Let us assume all 4 HDD will be set up with RAID 0 in new bios of new system board. Is the data on my HDD lost then? If yes, what is the recommended way to repair server without losing data?

Thank you!

1st question: Is the foirmware now up to date? Is something missing? - Yes, BIOS and iLO firmware is updated.

2nd question: Using the error code / error address I posted before, can you rule out other root causes such as e.g. defect fan? Does it really point to system board? - We do not see any fan related errors. This fault is usually due to a faulty system board.

3rd question: When I am going to replace system board I need to copy/restore bios settings like for raid controller to get the server running.

Thank you very much for these precise answers.

I checked documentation but could not find where the bios / raid settings are physically inside the server.

Reason: I have got another identical server without any errors and would like to move bios / raid settings from defect server to new server followed by the HDD. I hope this is easier than replacing the system board of the old server.

Is this a chip or card that can be located? Could you please point where to find bios?

Hello Andreas,

The BIOS settings and the RAID information are different.

The BIOS settings are embedded on system board and there is no chip to move it to the new server.

The RAID configuration is saved on the drives and the controller.

The controller might be embedded on the system board if you are using an embedded controller.

Thanks.

I am not sure whether I am using my embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i RAID Controller or Windows SATA controller or both to run RAID. I cannot check it in BIOS as the server does not boot to that point. But I do not havy any hardware raid controller. And the RAID is a windows software RAID 5. But can be that technically this runs on HP Smart Array RAID 0 as a deeper ground. Windows system disk itself is not part of its RAid 5 (of course, impossible to raid itself). This means defect server has 1 windows/system HDD and 3 windows RAID 5 HDD.

Does this mean that controller and RAID settings are lost (assuming system board replacement)?

If I get a new system board as recommended, and RAID configuration is partly on my disks and partly on defect system board, how can I restore / restart my system initially without data loss? Is this possible at all?

If I set embedded HP Dynamic Smart Array B120i RAID Controller to RAID 0 for each of my 4 HDD, will it then format / write to them automatically? (which would mean data loss and complete system rebuild)

Hello,

I would suggest, you have to log a support case with HPE, and share the appropriate logs for further analysis.

Thanks.
