I think the title is pretty self explainatory.

I started mumbling about it when I wanted to upgrade my Smart Array p420i controller from 8.32 to 8.32(E).

Can you please explain or provide a good techincal article on this topic? Downsides, differences of each...

Please explain in detail what exactly are you looking for. Downsides, differences of what exactly. More information is needed in order to understand what exactly is required. Below is the SSA user guide as well which includes the different types of commands. Which topic are you exactly referring to.

If it is just the difference between the firmware version from 8.32 and 8.32(E) then this i have already shared which shows the same.

If there is some issue you are facing upgrading the firmware then please share a screenshot or log a support ticket.

My Smart Array Controller is :

Smart Array P420i
Firmware Version: 8.32-0

If you run the upgrade normally to 8.32(E) (the latest availbale) the upgrade does not take place because it says that the firmware is already up to date.

By reading the documentation, it is being said that to force an update you can use either the -force or the -rewrite switches.

My question is: what are the diferrences between these two switches but, most importantly, what are the effects on the controller by using either one or the other?

The force command is used to force a firmware however try updating in a sequential method. If issue still persists then try performing an offline upgrade. I can see that this firmware is available in the SPP Gen9.1:-

Try performing update in interactive mode and select only the controller.

If still issues then log a support ticket.
