Upgrading a HPE iLo DL380P ProLiant Gen8

Hi! First post here! I'm trying to upgrade a HPE iLo DL380P ProLiant Gen8, that is used to host VMWare boxes, to the latest firmware version. It's currently on v. 2.30

So a few questions:

1. Can I jump straight to the newest version? (v. 2.8.2)

2. How can I make sure it will work with the server? I'm afraid it would mess with drivers for the hardware

3. I can see there is two versions of firmware, one for Windows and one for Linux. How can I tell which is the right one?

Most of the time I would update the iLO using my browser, so you'd probably want to be downloading the windows version of the ilo update, and using your preferred zip tools, extract the ilo4_282.bin file. Put the file on your desktop or another accessible place.

Then login to the iLO ip using your web browser.

In Gen8 servers with iLO4 you can find the 'Administration' menu on the left side of the web page, then select 'Firmware'.
Use the 'Browse' button to find your ilo4 binary file you extracted earlier and the rest of the operation should be straightforward.

The upload and update process takes a few minutes, so you'll need to wait for a little while, but eventually it will restart the iLO and you can login again.

Edit: also the iLO is an independant processor, so unless you are currently using iLO to mount an ISO-image or some other media, or you are using the iLO to perform some other firmware update, restarting the iLO should have no impact on drivers or anything else in the operating system.

Since you said you are "hosting VMware boxes" and perhaps that means you are running the VMware vSphere ESXi Hypervisor on your DL380P ProLiant Gen8 to host virtual machines, you should be aware that there is also an iLO firmware update package for installing from inside the ESXi Hypervisor operating system. This might be useful if you don't have browser access to the iLO, but you can transfer a firmware update via SSH (for example).

You might want to take note of the warining in the instuction page that states "iLO 4 firmware update does not require a server reboot; however, if VMware ESXi is booting from an SD card, a reboot is required".

In most systems, it's easier to use the web browser method that I described in my previous post.

Thank you so much! I've got access to it via the web browswer so I'll upgrade it through that. It's only use is for those VM's, I'm going to reboot it anyway after it's done just to be sure. Is it okay to jump to the newest version or do I have to go through each version until I get the newest one?

I've never had a problem updating from older iLO-4 to the latest firmware. However I have heard that multiple upgrade phases are a recommendation for some other HPE firmware. If you wanted to be extra cautious, you could consider going though an intemdiate version such as 2.55 or 2.62.
