topic HP DL580 Gen8: Processor upgrade E7-8890 v3 or E7-8890 v4 compatibility in HPE ProLiant Servers (ML,DL,SL)

Is it possible to upgrade an HP DL580 Gen8 server from processor E7-4880 v2 to one of the processors available for HP DL580 Gen9, i.e. E7-8890 v3 or E7-8890 v4?

The used socket is the same, I think the chipset too. PCI3 and DDR3 RAM are supported by both. QLink is 9,6 GT/s versus 8 GT/S in Gen8.
BIOS, Firmware, ... ?

I want to benefit from the higher core count and advanced instruction sets, like AVX2.

Is this upgrade compatible with a Gen8 server?
Has anyone evaluated this?

Hi,

Thank you for your quick response.

Of course, I know the specification, but wanted to know if it is possible independently. Has anyone tried this or does anyone know of any technical obstacles that make such an upgrade impossible?

@radizi

Good day!

Upgrading processors in a server like the HP DL580 Gen8 can be a complex process, and it's essential to ensure compatibility before attempting such an upgrade. While the sockets and some features may be similar between the Gen8 and Gen9 models, there are several factors to consider:

>> You mentioned that the socket is the same, which is a good starting point. Both the Gen8 and Gen9 DL580 servers typically use LGA 2011 sockets.

>> While the sockets may be the same, the chipsets used in Gen8 and Gen9 servers may differ. The chipset plays a crucial role in the compatibility of processors, as it manages the communication between various hardware components. It's essential to check whether the chipset in the Gen8 server supports the newer E7-8890 v3 or E7-8890 v4 processors.

>> The BIOS and firmware of the Gen8 server need to support the new processors. Manufacturers like HP often release BIOS updates to add support for newer CPU models. You should check HP's official website for BIOS updates and compatibility information.

>> You mentioned that PCIe 3.0 and DDR3 RAM are supported by both generations, which is a good sign. However, it's still crucial to verify that these components will work seamlessly with the upgraded processors.

>> The QPI (QuickPath Interconnect) or QLink speed you mentioned may differ between the Gen8 and Gen9 processors. Ensure that the Gen8 server can handle the higher QLink speed of the Gen9 processors.

>> If you want to benefit from advanced instruction sets like AVX2, you should also check if the software you plan to use supports these instructions and whether the operating system is compatible.

>> Newer processors may have different thermal and power requirements. Ensure that the cooling system and power supply in your Gen8 server can handle the upgraded processors' demands.

In summary, it's technically possible to upgrade processors in an HP DL580 Gen8 server to E7-8890 v3 or E7-8890 v4 processors if socket compatibility is confirmed. However, you must thoroughly research and verify compatibility with the motherboard's chipset, BIOS, firmware, QLink speed, and other components to ensure a successful upgrade. Additionally, consider the costs and potential risks associated with such an upgrade, and consult support for further assistance.
