How do you actually APPLY an SPP Patch Bundle to an SPP (Service Pack for Proliant) ISO?

How do you actually *apply* an SPP patch bundle to an existing SPP ISO? I'm not using VMWare and the server has no OS installed. I'm simply booting a bare metal Proliant G10 from the latest SPP and would like to apply the updates in the Patch Bundles to the latest SPP. However, I cannot find instructions for this anywhere.

The Patch Bundle "instructions" on the HPE website aren't instructions at all - they're nothing more than checksums and a manifest. I've noticed this problem for as long as I can remember and have reported it to HPE multiple times, but they refuse to address it. What you see below is the extent of the "instructions" that HPE provides to apply the Patch Bundle.

For example, I'm using Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) v2023.09.00.00 Gen10 - https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/softwaredetails?softwareId=MTX_4d9855ba25bc45b8b2f42a04e6

I'm then trying to apply the latest SPP Patch Bundle (Patch bundle for Gen10 SPP 2023.09.00.03, 12/19/23) to the existing SPP - - https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/softwaredetails?softwareId=MTX_c24ffcd9173142c0ad3984ba47

After booting the server from the SPP ISO, I can find no option in Smart Update Manager to apply the newest updates in the Patch Bundle to the existing SPP data.

Hi,

There are two ways to install a Patch Bundle. A similar post.
1. Merge Patch Bundle into the existing SPP using a different computer.
2. Create and Download a Custom SPP.

@Suman_1978 One question. After I've followed your option 2 choice (Create and Download a Custom SPP.) and successfully downloaded the 2023.09.00.03 SPP with the 12/19/23 Patch Bundle slipstreamed into it, shouldn't SUM show v2023.09.00.03, rather than the base SPP of 2023.09.00.00, as shown below after booting from the downloaded ISO?

The following baseline screen does however indicate that this includes the 2023.09.00.03 (12/19/23) Patch Bundle. Just concerning this isn't indicated on the initial boot screen.

Hello @Suman_1978 , besides the given options to integrate a patch bundle into an SPP, it seems that there is no manual way of doing so. Unfortunately, for some reason I cannot access the custom SPPs.

According to https://techlibrary.hpe.com/docs/enterprise/servers/icsp/7.5/webhelp/content/s_osdbuildplan_SPP_maint.html I tried to copy the (extracted) 7z into the hp/swpackages directory on a USB drive, which was already used for a successful deployment. I also tried to add a (hopefully) detected respostory manually in SUM but no success, it was not shown.

What did I miss? Is there some simple hack, which registers/announces an other directory as additional repositiory? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

It should work actually, but here are some commands that will help.
I hope you are using hpsum.bat file to start the installation.

hpsum.bat /silent /allow_non_bundle_components /allow_update_to_bundle
hpsum.bat /use_latest /allow_non_bundle_components /silent

If you are using smartupdate, please refer to the guide.
Define baseline location

If none of these help you to install SPP, you may contact HPE Support for help.

Hello, thanks for the fast reply.

We're having just two HP servers (DL360 Gen10) which will be upgraded using offline upgrade by booting from USB drive. Therefore, I cannot apply your suggestions - neither in OS-offline boot nor within the OS, because we are running Debian 12 (and not RHEL, Suse, etc.) on the host.

So if there is an option using the shell after booting the USB drive suggestion would apply.

May you have a further approach to solve the issue?

Hi,

There is an option to run the Script via UEFI shell, I have not tried this myself, but there is an option to update firmware, here is the documentation. You may try this option, if still unable to deploy, contact support.

Hello, thanks für your input, which may falls into oblivion if you focus und SPP ISOs and is quite applicable if you only have direct downloaded firmware file. In my case there are two servers which I did not even know which and how many components are upgradable - so a SPP is a good choice.

In the meantime I renamed the folders in the USB drive root which are available in the 7z and copied/moved instead the directorys of 7z in root of drive. No success, the start of the SUM failed silently. So, no simple hack so far possible in order to integrate a patch bundle besides the Custom SPPs - which are now avaible for me. The problem as such I could now be marked (again) as solved.

Anyway, for convenience of all HP customers I request the HP Support to show a simple way of integrating a patch bundle by a (bash/powershell/sh/cmd) script. Assume USB drive <mountpoint>, directory or 7z <path> and let the merging begin. (Or maybe even more simpler... the SUM has the ability to choose an additional repository but it is not that easy resp. obvisously to use.)

This may be a convenient improvement for further resp. new major SPP versions.
