The Gen9 does not have enough Bus Width to accommodate 8x NVME.

In slot #1 of the Gen9 it supports only x8 PCIe 3.0

The Gen 10 in slot #1 supports x16 PCIe 3.0

This is why the 8x NVME drives will not work in the Gen9 as there is not enough PCIe lanes dedicated to NVME

Sadly thats the answer the Gen9 cannot support 8x NVME

will this 8x NVME HPE 872317-001 work in a Gen9 instead of having to settle for 6 NVME

HP 779313-001 Backplane 6x 2,5" NVMe + Cage 780972-001

which works in the gen9 and 10.

Im hoping that a gen10 controller and cage will work in my ML350 Gen9 since the gen9 gear will work in both Gen's

Thats not what i asked if i wanted to know i already have Gen10 specs.

I would like to know if i can put a gen10 8xNVME in a Gen9, i know physically it fits however am wondering if the gen10 nvme controller would work in the Gen9 and would there be firmware SPP thats supports it.

Just willy nilly throwing out links without reading my Question is wasting everyones time "may get you some badges" but dont wash with me.

Is there any HPE employees out there who know what they are talking about or do we have to pay for them?

Maybe the only way to know for sure is to create a Frankestein Server and buy the 8x NVME and the controller meant for a Gen10 and put it in my Gen9 and see if the firmware "handles the jandal"...

Solve my own question

Think i will have to stick with the Gen9 6x NVME setup as although physically the cage, backplane will bolt right in.

The P816i-a i need to run the 8x NVME will have firmware issues

Would have been nice if they were backwards compatible. The 6 bay Gen9s are way more expensive than the 8 bay Gen10s. I've been looking all over for a straight answer.

Hi there,

As far as I can see on this Proliant ML350v3, 4 slots are presenting PCIe 1, 4, 8, 16. Slots # are 1, 3, 6 and 8.

There may be other reasons why this won't, or doesn't work.

So I hope the project didn't end here. Curious if this will work.
