Many thanks for the reply. Recently one of our servers' serial number changed and hence the query. The board was definitely not changed. Perhaps some firmware was changed. There was no technician onsite to update the serial no. Is there any official document on this ? Or about other attributes to uniquely id the server ?

Thank you in advance.

Regards,

Bharat

The server serial no. changes as is widely known. Thus it cannot be used as a unique id for a server. Is there any other way of uniquely identifying a server across hardware replacements and firmware changes ? I discovered asset tag but looks like it needs to be set and locked by a user. Another attribute is UUID. Is this the same as UUID exposed by the redfish service ?

Dell has something called server tag wondering if we ahve anything similar.

Regards,

Bharat

Hello,

The server's serial number uniquely identifies it. In the instance of the changing the system board, the serial number is updated by the service engineer to continue to uniquely identify it.

Regards,

Hello,

There is no official documentation that would state explicitly as "If any firmware is updated, the server's serial number would not change".

This is not an expected behaviour of any electronic product. If such a thing has happenned, then it would be recommended to log a case with HPE Support using the HPE Support Center Case Manager explaining in detail- the all activity that was perforemd on the server and the result of each activity.

Regards,

I asked for a documentation not disclaimer. Off course i was not clear. So what I want is the official documentation that
1) Explains what does identify a server uniquely across reboots and any kind of upgrade, change of oem and partner and hpe parts where applicable and,
2) Documentation on how a user can update serial number when required. And if need be extra steps for ensuring this persists across reboots.

And I will raise a support case for this information.

Thank you again,
Regards,
Bharat
