Hi Guys,

After updating to ILO5 Firmware 3.04 a client server Proliant DL380 Gen10 started making a lot of noise by the fans.
Before the upgrade it would not get above 20%. after startup in Windows.

And now is this the new normal. You can guess the client is not happy.

I have already run latest SPP for all the drivers/bios/software on the server after the ILO5 upgrade but nothing resolves the problem with the fans.
Also i had in the past sort of a same issues and after powering off disconnecting the power cords and plugin again in after startup the server start to work normal. It were diffrent servers.
But now this is also not helping.

I have read almost all forums that i could find but nothing is helping.
Also did a factory reset of the ILO5 this also did not help.
Changed to multiple diffrent power configs in bios and in ILO5 but nothing helps.

Someone any suggestions?

Solved my own problem.
Ok guys if you get this problem with ILO5 version 3.04 then just downgrade with the ILO5 version 3.03.
You can gust download that version and update firmware from ILO5 dashboard.

After this the FAN are again silent!

I just came to say thank you so much for noticing and trying something I hadn't tried yet.

I upgraded my DL380 G10 to 3.04 and honestly regretted the update. I tried so many ways to shut it up but was ready to give up and sell the thing. In a homelab, the noise was unbearable.

I did find however the noise was related to the BMC temp. flipping a can of air upside down and spraying the BMC to cool it down, the temps dropped on the BMC to 3c and the fans also went down to normal speeds again. I tried putting a heatsink on it which dropped the temps by 10c but the fans still weren't slowing down much.

HPE team, please investigate this unnessary ramping of the fans because the BMC temp is at 56c to 60c with a heatsink on it and 68c to 70c without it. The issue is only present in 3.04 of iLO5.

Great to hear that it helped. I also spent all day troubleshooting. With no success. Also when you search if Ilo5 is able to downgrade everywhere i read that this is not possible so i did not try it first.

But i did not know what to try so i took a chance to just try it.

Thank you for the sharing, it helped me to solve my problem.

I have DL380 Gen10 for homelab, with P408i-a, E208i-p, and NMVe PCI raiser installed, they control the box1, box2, and box3 respectively, the fan speed was like 11%, 11%, 11%, 16%, 20%, 20%, with iLO v2.72.

I upgraded to iLO v3.04, the fans went up to 33% - 56%, very loud, but the tempuratures are pretty same as they were.

Today when I read your post, I thoguth about downgrade it to v3.03, but I found there is v3.05, so I thought I should give it a try.

Then I upgraded iLO to v3.05, and the fan speed went back to previous level again between 11% - 20% with same reported tempuratures. I think something has been fixed in this version of iLO.

@reaper_1994 can I ask you what kind of heatsink you put on the iLO chip? My BMC tempurature is over 70C, I think that might be on of the reason I have fan runs around 20%, want to find a way to make it quieter. Thanks in advance!

Hi @Yangtze,

I used a heatsink made for a Raspberry Pi. This is the exact one: https://www.jaycar.com.au/heatsink-pin-grid-array-with-adheasive-thermal-transfer-tape/p/HH8580

I replaced the thermal adheasive with a thermal pad to get better heat transfer. I currently don't have a way to put pressure on it though. That's a problem for another day.

Good to know there is a 3.05 now.
