topic HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen10 Supported CPUs Question in ProLiant Servers (ML,DL,SL)

I´m sorry if my question sounds dumb to any of you, im new to the server environment and I´m doing this only as a hobby.

But, in the QuickSpecs PDF is a list of supported CPUs. I see the 9th gen i3 is listed. Is that just a placeholder for every 9th gen or can i really ONLY use the i3?

If i can only use the i3, why? How are i5´s and i7´s different? Aren`t i3 processors just i5 processors that had slight faults in production?

Also, if im here what´s your opinnion on Enginering Samples? For example: Xeon E-2278g ES QQM6

Hi @Paul251 ,
I am writing this on my experience. I have seen the DL servers with Xeon processors. But i3 is mentioned in DL20 Gen10 quickspecs.
There are many more criterias to be fulfilled by server for using i5 or i7 processors in place of i3 processor. Some of them are-
Socket : Socket of i3 fits for i5 and i7 processor.
Since i3, i5 i7 are of same generations, they might have same socket type. I am not sure.

Power and Temperature : I believe, there is more difference in Power supply consumption and Temperature relased from the processor in i3, i5 and i7 generations. It is called as Thermal Design power(TDP).

Motherboard : Motherboard and its chipset is built for i3. To use i5 or i7 processor, motherboard should support.

As a conclusion, a company restrict on multiple factors to consider as supported components of a Server. It creates the quickspecs listing all supported components to help the customer.
Hope my post answers your query. If yes, please give 'Kudos' and mark my post as 'Accepted Solution'

Regards,
Shiva_jr
