Depending on your O/S, you could do a "Software based RAID" using just the SCSI controller. There are drawbacks to doing this as the O/S has to compute all the disk writes to the disk itself. This computation uses resources suptracting from the processing power of the server.

When you use a Smart Array Controller (like a SmartArray 3200 Controller) you create a "Hardware based RAID". This method removes the need for the processors to much else but tell the controller to write the data.

When you use a Hardware based RAID, you gain the advantage of array acceleration using a separate cache for data read and write. You have a separate processor for data read and write and you have the major advantage of "Hot Spares". There are many other features to look at and measure vs. the costs.

I mention the SmartArray 3200 Controller for compatability sake. They are discontinued from production, but you can find them from Part Stores.

I don't see the SmartArray 3200 Controller on the QuickSpecs controller list. Can I use it in the Proliant 800 PII (6/400) server? Also, I see that it's an Ultra2 SCSI controller. Does this mean I need to get Ultra 2 SCSI hard drives?

David:

You can use a number of controllers in this server, I only mentioned the 3200 series because they are readily available and inexpensive.

You could install a SmartArray 4200 or 5300 series controller in the ProLiant 800 PII system.

No you would not have to purchase Ultra2 drives, these drives are backwards compatable.
