Tape drive on DL760G2 running Linux ES 3.0

I have 2 similar hardware DL760G2 servers. One is running on win2k and the other is on Redhat Linux ES 3.0. The win2k server has no problems detecting the tape drive i have but the Linux server could not detect it.

I did a cat /proc/scsi/scsi and don't see any tape device. I have also made sure that the SCSI Tape support and SCSI generic support is built into my kernel. I'm suspecting that the problem might lie on the SCSI card which is Smart Array 5i but the 3 HDDs it is connected to is working fine.

I read somewhere that RAID controllers might have problems with tape devices. Is this true? But if its true, how can my Win2k server detect the tape drive?

The CCISS drivers under linux are very different than in Windows. They do not have native support for tape devices.

Your best bet is to purchase a separate SCSI adapter for the tape drive. I recommend the 64-Bit/133MHz Dual Channel Ultra320 SCSI Adapter - Option Part Number: 268351-B21
This card has good bandwidth to pipe a good backup through.
