Hi all,

We have a customer who has the standard 80GB on raid controller card in their ML380G3, and want to upgrade to raid 5.

Is there a good way to do that without reinstalling the OS?
Yes, you need to expand firstly Array than Extend and migrate to R5 level,
Load latest ACU; make sure Driver and Firmware for Array Controller latest. W2K with SP3 at least
Here is more info:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00142272/c00142272.pdf
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/software-management/acumatrix/index.html
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DocumentIndex.jsp?locale=en_US&taskId=101&docIndexId=179166&contentType=SupportManual&prodSeriesId=468780&prodTypeId=0
http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/index.html
Tommy,
I have not tried this, but in theory it might just work:

1) Perform full system backup in case rebuild is necessary, document any specialized settings, registry entries, shares etc.
2)Power down server and install new Smart Array controller in server, power up
3) Install PSP 7.3 so that the array controller has the latest drivers.
4) shutdown server and cable to array controller.
5) Change system configuration to use SA as the boot controller.
6) Configure array controller via F8 for RAID0
7) verify os will boot
8) install 2nd drive in server (Raid1)
9) using ACU migrate config to RAID1

According to this recent post another customer was able to do this successfully:

http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=610283

That's an interesting idea, are you saying just assume the JBOD as RAID-0?

Tommy

Tommy,

If the HDD is connected to a Smart Array Controller (Raid Controller). Then you should be able to add 2x HDDs of equal size (80 GB) and within the ACU (Array configuration Utility) perform a Raid Migration to Raid 5. HP recomends a good back up, latest drivers and firmware for the controller and the latest ACU. I think that SP3 or 4 may need to be installed on the OS as well.

Regards.

If this is a DL380 G3 then there shouln't be such a thing as "regular". There is no standard scsi adapter installed by default. If the drive is running off the 5i, then it's likely a raid 0 and there shouldn't be a problem migrating from a raid 0 to a raid 5.
