be careful with array controllers and maximum configurable array sizes.....

5300 with an MSA30 disk enclosure(14 drives) of 300Gb (U320) size = max array size 800GB not 1.4Tb (the max size of the disks in the MSA). This assumes some kind of RAID config on the MSA though.

You would need to create additional arrays to use the rest of the space and span disks across the arrays for maximum ammount of usable space within your OS. This then does away with any sort of hardware RAID redundancy though, not a good idea! :)

If using it internally on a server with, say, 6 disks max this should not be an issue. Something to be aware of though.

What type of drives are compatible with the controller? I can not seem to find it in any of the SmartArray documentation I have found so far.

Keith

So I if I read it right, it supports Ultra3, Ultra2 and Wide-Ultra (SCSI-3) LVD (Low Voltage Differential) and SE (Single Ended) drives?

Keith

Yes.
You can use new Ultra320 drives as well,
it will work as Ultra3.
