It's a very easy. You need to add one more hard drive which will be as spare, then run Array Configuration Utility (ACU) and do following steps:
(See Array Configuration Utility User Guide, 22 May 2006, Modifying an existing configuration-> Spare management, page 26)
1. Click Spare Management, and then click Begin.
2. Select the array that is to have additional (or fewer) spare drives.
3. Select the drives that you want to assign as spares, and deselect
spares that you want to remove.
4. Click Next.
5. Click Finish to accept the changes.
6. Click Save, and then click OK on the confirmation alert.

BR, Oleg.

How do I configure a hot spare for the Smart Array 642? This is for a ProLiant DL380 server. There are currently 3 drives in a RAID 5 set-up. I would like to add the hot spare in case of a failure.

Thanks in advance.

1- Plug the spare (No need to reboot)
2- Go to ACU, select the controller, Select the Logical drive, and add the spare to it.

--
