Hi!
I'm fighting with the same problem like already discussed here: installation of W2K3 on DL320 G4 with SATA controller.
@1: I gave up configuring RAID1 and disabled the SATA controller in RBSU, but SmartStart installation still doesn't work (no supported controller)
@2: in RBSU I cannot change the Boot Controller Order (SATA is always the first, I cannot choose)
@3: I bought the server without Floppy Drive. IF I need to make a manual installation: do I need the floppy drive for the SATA driver? Windows requests the different controller driver in A:.
@4: If I do configure Raid1 I cannot create drives in the SATA Array Configuration Utility.

I always counted on HP ProLiant servers but this desaster now with simply installing Windows server on the machine... Unbelievable!!!

Regards
Michaela
Hi Michaela,

1. Smart Start CD does not detect the SATA onboard controller.

2. Has the server has only SATA controller, by default that is the one listed first in Boot controller Order.

3. You may need to use a USB FDD to supply the SATA controller driver for windows.

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23534.html

4. Select Raid 1 in the SATA Array confifuration utility, during the Windows installation you could specify or Create a Partition size that you require. Later using Disk Management or HP SATA RAID Controller Manager for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003 to creating more partition or managing the array.

HP SATA RAID Controller Manager for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003:
http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24806.html

:)

Hi,

thanks for the fast response.

The server has next to the SATA controller also the "normal" PCI IDE controller.
Hi Michaela:

1- DL320 G4 with embedded sata raid is not supported in the smartstart cd. You will need to perform manual install. Floppy option required to load drivers. With Manual install you can use raid if you want.

2- don't need to change the boot controller unless you are using a different pci controller as boot controller. for now just keep it the same.

3- You will need the floppy for the F6 and driver for the SATA controller. (can use USB floppy drive or usb key.

4- Once you configure Raid ; just do manual install; Smartstart dosenot work this server in detected the embedded controller.

-

- if you donâ t have the floppy you can use a usb key with the F6 option in windows.
HP USB Key Utility for Windows
version 1.0.0.0 (1 Jun 06) http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/24828.html
- Here is the driver for the embedded controller.
HP Embedded SATA RAID Controller Driver for Windows 2000/Windows Server 2003
version 1.0.414.0-3842 (15 Aug 05) http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23534.html
-

Other Links:
-
HP ProLiant DL320 G4 Server, Microsoft Windows Server 2003 http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/locate/69_6163.html
-
Notice: SmartStart Assisted Installation Is Not Supported on a ProLiant DL320 G3, ProLiant DL320 G4, ProLiant ML310 G2, or ProLiant ML310 G3 Server When the HP Embedded SATA RAID 0/1 Controller is Enabled in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU)
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00691103&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN
-

Best regards,

Tarek.
Hi,

Did you try this:
Insert the diskette into a machine with an existing Windows operating system installed.
- Go to the command prompt.START-RUN-CMD-OK- At the prompt, type DIR A:
- If the Volume Serial number is 0000-0000. the diskette is still in it's formatted state from the diskette manufacturer. It may be the cause of this error. Re-format the diskette and copy over the driver files again.

Regds
NS

Here's a thought...How about the SmartStart guru's in our development side actually add the support for the embedded SATA controller so that our customers can use the SmartStart application that is shipped with the DL320 G4??? Just an idea.. I have a customer that ordered a dozen DL320 G4 without the floppy add-on and cannot use the SmartStart CD due the the unrecognized controller. We ended up using iLO with a virtual floppy to install W2K3 manually. I just feel that if HP is going to ship units with embedded hardware then the software configurations tools shipped with these should support them.
