Hi

I'm getting the following error on a DL380 G3, with a Ultrium 1 drive plugged into the embedded 5i controller. I have applied the latest firmware to system and support pack. It is causing my backup to fail. Have any ideas on how I can resolve this please?

Event Type: Error
Event Source: cpqcissm
Event Category: None
Event ID: 11
Date: 29/09/2006
Time: 10:36:26
User: N/A
Computer: ERUCONGRESS
Description:
The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\cpqcissm1.
Data:
0000: 0f 00 10 00 01 00 6a 00 ......j.
0008: 00 00 00 00 0b 00 04 c0 .......À
0010: 0b 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0018: 02 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0020: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ........
0028: 00 00 00 00 04 00 00 00 ........
0030: 00 00 00 00 07 00 00 00 ........

Hi Julian,

I would suggest you to use a seperate SCSI controller card for Ultrium drive.

That should take care of the issue.

Regards,
Raj.

The embedded smart array only has the tape drive plugged into it. There is another controller running the drives.

Would you still recommend using a sepearte card?

I would not agree on using a seperate controller when HP has certified using the Tape Drive on 5i Controller. The below link confirms that.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&objectID=c00336093&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

You may want to check as to when does the error occurs. Is it while the backup runs or just at the time of booting up or shutting down.

Apart from that the driver/firmware for 5i and the Ultrium drive Firmware should be updated if not done already.

Hi Julian,

1. Ensure that the Firmware is also updated on the Ultrium 1 drive.

2. There error message says controller error, try to run the diagnostics on the Ultrium drive or Contact HP Support for TS.

3. If diagnostics clears, than try using a seperate SCSI card and check if everything works fine.

Regards,
Raj.

Hi, no tape device should be connected to any smart array controller, since SA controller won't be capable of controlling these devices, what you need ot a PCI SCSI controller for the tape device, once this is done, the error will go away.

Listen to Rampante, the Smart Array controller cannot communicate properly to the tape drive since SA-C are meant to gather a lot of diagnosing information from SCSI media..

ADU says: No drives present on SA-5i, Drive 5 on the SA-641 has 3 timeouts and that's it..

----

Unplug the TD and look for more errors on event viewer, advice of anything only when you have the TD unpluged..

Incase the error occurs while taking a backup and the backup also fails,it is definite that the error will not occur once the tape drive is removed.

Also,I agree that it is not recommended to have Automation devices connected to Smart Arrays but Smart Array 5i is certified to be used with LTO1 which is a standalone device.

Hi Julian,

Was this drive working before. If it was then it is unlikely a compatibility issue.
