Hello Tamas,
Following are the STORAGE CONTROLLER options for you on a DL320 G1 Server:

Wide Ultra2 SCSI, Single Channel Controller (DL320, only)
212689-B21

Compaq RAID LC2 Controller [ 3 ]
188044-B21

Smart Array 221 Controller
388099-B21

Smart Array 3200 Controller
295643-B21

Smart Array 431 Controller [ 3 ]
127695-B21

Smart Array 532 Controller [ 3 ]
225338-B21

Smart Array 5302/32 Controller
166207-B21

Smart Array 5302/64 Controller
124992-B21

Smart Array 5304/128 Controller
158939-B21

Ultra3 Channel Expansion Module for Smart Array 5300 Controller
153507-B21

128 MB Cache Module for Smart Array 5302 Controller
153506-B21

Advanced Data Guarding Module for Smart Array 5302 Controller
199371-B21

64-bit Dual Channel Wide Ultra2 SCSI Adapter
348757-B21 (Discontinued)

64-bit/66 MHz Single Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter [ 3 4 ]
154457-B21

64-bit/66 MHz Dual Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter [ 3 4 ]
129803-B21

Wide-Ultra SCSI-3 SCSI Adapter
272514-001

SAN Access Module for Smart Array 5302 Controller [ 5 ]
216687-B21

Smart Array 5302/FC Controller [ 6 ]
216688-B21

Note 3:
Supports Wide Ultra2/3 SCSI drives only. If cabling to internal drives, first remove the integrated controller module. ATA models require the Wide Ultra3 SCSI cable option kit 212690-B21.
Note 4:
The 64-bit/66MHz Single or Dual Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter (129803-B21) will default to Wide Ultra2, Wide-Ultra SCSI-3, Fast-Wide SCSI-2 or Fast SCSI-2 when not used with the Wide Ultra3 hard drives.
Note 5:
SAN Access Module for Smart Array 5302 Controller is required to support the LVD based libraries (TL891DLX).
Note 6:
Smart Array 5302/FC Controller is required to support the LVD based libraries (TL891DLX).

Regards,
James.

Hello!

I plan to buy a used DL320 G1 server with 70GB SCSI disks, which i'd like to swap to 2 500GB SATA disks, using a PCI SATA controller. Browsing this forum it looks like to me that the DL320 can boot from a PCI add-on card, i just want to be sure about it before i buy the server.
Any help much appreciated!

Tamas
Thank you for the accurate and detailed answer!

However, buying official parts for an aging Compaq server may cost a bit more than my budget, so i'm more interested in using some cheap SATA controller, like the Kouwell 571S. I know that they aren't supported officially and won't be covered by warranty, i just would like to know if they work or not.
Anyways, thanks again!

I personally have no experience with that; However, If the vendor provides latest drivers/firmwares for the OS & the server environment, I don't think it should be an issue.
Please refer Vendor for more details on Compatible server Hardware.

Regards,
James.

Every response to your question is eligible to earn between 1-10 points. No need to worry about running out of points - when a truly awesome reply rolls in that deserves a 10, you will be able to assign it a 10! However, be careful to assign points based on the value that a reply truly provides. Use the following scale as a guideline:

o N/A: The answer was simply a point of clarification to my original question

o 1-3: The answer didn't really help answer my question, but thanks for your assistance!

o 4- 7: The answer helped with a portion of my question, but I still need some additional help!

o 8-10: The answer has solved my problem completely! Now I'm a happy camper!

Although assigning points is not mandatory, it is a key component of a strong, interactive community, and it is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED.
