DL580G5 Memory shown incorrectly

I've just built a new DL580G5 with Windows 2k3 Enterprise 32-Bit.

It has 8Gb physical RAM (shows correctly in the POST and the HP Systems Management Homepage) but Control Panel and Task Manager both show 4Gb.

There is no redundant memory option selected in the BIOS, standard HP Advanced ECC.

The /PAE switch is present in boot.ini

Have i missed something, every other HP server i've built with 2k3 Enterprise shows the RAM correctly?

Just wanted to know that other HP servers with Win2k3 Enterprise edition are also DL580 G5 servers ?

What is the memory configuration on the server ?

Hi

This is the first G5, i've got some G4's with 12Gb and they're fine.

There's 4 banks of Dimms, the first and 2nd bank have 1x1Gb and 1x2Gb. The 3rd and 4th banks have 1x1Gb. The 4x1Gb came pre-installed - 1 in each bank, i added the 2x2gb into banks 1 and 2.

Please check the Memory congif for this server in the qucikspecs for DL580 G5

Check the memory config under this option

HP ProLiant DL580 G5 - Base memory configuration for 16 DIMM sockets in the 8 GB configuration

Hope this helps.

Also confirm the number of processors installed and specs as well

Thanks - i think my supplier should have sold me 4x1Gb DIMMS rather than 2x2Gb ones. I reckong that if i had all 4 banks identical then Windows would be happier. The docs seem to suggest that all should be the same.

Thanks but the install did that by default, i'm aware that it's required for 4Gb+ RAM. Still doesn't show up.

Did you try it without the PAE switch in the boot.ini?

Yeah i did and it makes no difference. I think you don't need that only if the DIMMS are hot-plug, which they're not.

My supplier is sending me a new 4Gb kit tomorrow (4x1Gb) so hopefully once all the banks are identical it will work. I'll post the outcome.

Sorry, completely forgot about this.

Yes, with the new memory kit (4x1Gb) it was fine. It seems that the G5 is fussy about having all 4 memory banks the same. The documentation sais that it's most efficient that way but not that it won't work if you do it another way.
