DL 385G2 adding second processor - server doesn't boot

Hi All!

I was wondering if anyone could help out with this...

We wanted to upgrade our HP DL 385G2 293765-001 (Operton 2216HE 2.4GHz) to two-processor system. We've bought HP 02216 HE Kit (408840-B21), as it was advised on HP web site.

Unfortunately after installing the second processor, the server doesn't boot at all. After plugging the power cord and pressing power button the server starts (fans are starting) and immediatelly, after 1 second, shuts down.

There are no errors displayed on the led panel, and no errors in iLO too.

Once the second processor is removed, the server boots normally.

Could anyone let me know please if we have to do anything else to enable dual processor option or if it's a hardware issue.

Hello,
Sure it is compatible.
HP Recommends a BIOS firmware update before installing a new processor.

If it doesnt boot even after the firmware upgrade, try use this Processor in the first slot & check. & hope you have the 2nd PPM also installed correctly.

I'll try updating BIOS firmware then. Unfortunately this can be done only late evenings or weekends.

I'll let you know once I try it out.

Unfortunately, after updateing the firmware the server didn't boot up again.

I also tried the frist slot and the server was dead too.

Looks like the processor is damaged?

Sounds like it.
Does the processor boot alone ?
on another server ?

I tried it only on the same machine. If only the first bay is populated with the new processor - it doesn't boot up.

Yes! Actually that's why we decided to add a second processor. We wanted to upgrade the system memory and use memory slots 5-8 so we had to add the second proc.

Regardless if the memory slost 5-8 are populated or not, the system doesn't boot up with the second processor.

Am I missing something here?

How about the 2nd PPM ? Do u see any LEDs next to it ?

Yes, I've seen them, there were two green LEDs lit.

I cannot check it right now, the server is in production running as single processor now.
