It's worth noting that when I put the two 512 sticks back in, it boots up fine.

Hi all,

Yesterday I was asked to upgrade the memory in a DL380 G4. The memory was already purchased.

The server already had two sticks of 512MB PC2 3200 memory, and it was being replaced with 2 1GB sticks of PC2 5300 memory.

The two 512 sticks were in slots 1A and 2A, and i took them both out and put the two 1GB sticks in the same slots.

When I start the machine up, I get one very long beep, and nothing comes up on the screen.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

If I check on Crucial.com/uk, I can see that the DL380 G4 does indeed take 5300 memory, but the server just doesn't seem to be accepting it.

Thanks in advance.
Wayne.

Update your ROM BIOS to latest version.
Crucial has this note on that PC2-5300 memory.

Maximum Memory: 12288MB
Slots: 6 (3 banks of 2)
Standard Memory: 512MB removable
USB Support: 2.x Compliant
Please ensure you update your server to ProLiant DL380 G4 ROM P51 (dated 12/02/2004) to ensure that dual-rank module support is enabled. However, only 4 dual-ranked DIMMs may be installed in the server.Installed in pairs of modules.
