Hello,

Maybe stupdid question but is it possible to have a RAID-1 (OS) and a RAID-5 (userdata) set on a Smart Array 641 (single channel)?

I know it is possible to use RAID 0+1 but does this also mean that you can have two seperate RAID sets on this controller, being low budget and so?

Thanks in advance.

Jos Rossiau

The SmartArray 641 can run a total of 6 disks in a number of configurations.

You can have a root mirror (two drives) and a RAID5 data array (3 drives) and a hot spare for both arrays or make a 4 drive RAID5

Yes, you can have two arrays on the controller through one SCSI Channel.

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/12067_na/12067_na.html
Single Channel--Provides the ability to support up to 6 drives or 1.80 TB
Just to illustrate John's excellent answer:

I just built a ML350 G4 server with a 641 array controller. I used 6 x 18 GB drives in the drive cage. I configured two arrays:

1) A RAID 1 mirror using 2 drives for the operating system and applications.

2) A RAID 0+1 array using the other 4 drives for data (Exchange server databases).

HTH.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I suspected that it should be possible, but the one channel thing made me a bit nervous about it.

I can safely choose the SA-641 for our server then.

Greetings,

Jos

Yes it is possible to have more RAID sets on the SA-641 with only one channel.

Thanks for clearing up the misunderstanding on my part.
