Miguel:

Error 1783 can be bad:

Did you try to update the bios on the controller and the update failed? If so, try to install the bios from a "NEW" diskette. If this does not work, replace the controller.

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/storage/us/download/14694.html

If this error was not cause by a bad ROM update, try reseating the SA3200 in the PCI slot and see if the controller error goes away. If not try it in another PCI slot. If this still does not fix the error, you will need to replace the controller.

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/UCR/SupportManual/TPM_338615-2/TPM_338615-2.pdf

Hope this helps you. - john

I recently rebooted my Windows 2003 server running on a Proliant 1850 with a Smart Array Controller 3200. While going through the POST the Array displays a message that reads:
1783-Slot 4 Drive Array Controller Failure.
Does anyone have any ideas on what's causing this issue? any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks John, I have tried all of your suggestions except replace the SA3200. I just placed an order for a new one. I should be getting it in a couple of days. One quick question for you... I also purchased the Compaq Storage System UE for this server (Proliant 1850R with the SA3200) The external storage is used so I'm sure it still has the old configuration. How would you suggest I add this to the server without erasing any of my current data?
Thanks again for your time and your help. I truly appreciate it.
I am assuming the UE enclosure you ordered has disks in it. This is not a problem.

When you get the enclosure installed (connected properly to the new 3200) you should use the SmartStart CD (Array Configuration Utility) to create "new" array(s) on the enclosure drives.
This will wipe out any data on the UE that it may have had in its past life.
So long as you do not erase any existing arrays that are internal to the server you will be fine.
Do you remember how many logical arrays you had previously? If so, just be sure not to remove these.

Here is a document that may help you:
ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/user_reference_guides/239449-004_rev4_us.pdf

Let me know if you need any more help! -john
