There is a Utility, strangely enough called Uptime, that I think I downloaded from the MS Site. You can use it to report on the times the Server was rebooted. It gives quite a comprehensive report.

As for Scott's question, a perennial favourite, when is a Server Up?

Personally, and from an IM perspective, when the Server is up and the OS has loaded successfully. Non-critical stuff, e.g. Agents would not be part of that. Mainly to do with the politics of SLA reporting!

Obviously some SLAs are tied to applications, but that would be virtually impossible to build into IM.

It is definitely something you can monitor. Just look in the device info or configuration button for Server uptime information. No really sure if you will see in it in a report, maybe if you create a custom one.

You can see the value in the reports. Either select one of the reports from the Reports|Forms menu and use edit, or use your favorite file viewer to look at any of the .FRM files in the CIM installation directory.

There is a line that has the string "Up time (1/100 s)". As gluyten already mentioned, you caould probably make a custom report that just has this line, along with a few key other ones you may be interested in. If you do this manually, make sure you don't lose any of the TAB characters that separate bits and pieces of each line.

Hey, this is a good thing to have a discussion on. Mainly - what does server uptime mean to you?

Is the server up, only if it is meeting it's assigned SLA? That is, does the application it is running respond in the appropriate period of time?

What if the application crashes, but the OS and agents are running - is the server up?

What if the agents die but the OS is running - is the server up?

What if the server hardware POSTS fine, but the OS can't be loaded from the drive - is the server up?

Maybe if we can get a good consensus here we can figure out how to add this into Insight Manager.

Although if server application performance is one of your criteria, you need to be looking into a SPI for OpenView Operations.

Yup, I use uptime from Microsoft just now but it would be simpler to have this as an automated report that management can run, i.e. why I would like to run this through Insight Manager.

SLA's are probably different for each server, whether it be process, application, OS etc. but I am just looking for the uptime of the server.

Dave
