The Foundation Agents are, I believe the 'core' of the agents. If these are on, your client should be able to send alerts (providing its SNMP is Started, and set to Automatic).

Firstly, have you set the SMTP Host and E Mail address under Settings>Server>EMail on IM? Assuming this has been done, with valid entries, have you checked to see if your SMTP Host will alow these messages through?

Thanks for your help.
As you suggested the SMTP trap service was not started.
One last question while i have your attention.
Exactly what agent needs to be on the discovered device to allow it it to send the alert ?

thanks in advance for your continued help

The devices don't send the email alerts. The IM server does. Are you receiving alerts now, though?

Brent

Yes, please make sure the SMTP settings in IM7 are set up correctly (under the Settings/Server tab).

Also, make sure you have a notification task tied to an Event Query. By default, there is an Important Uncleared Events query you can use. As long as your devices have their SNMP trap destinations correct (so traps get sent to the IM7 server), you should be all set.
