Hard drive firmware has to be flashed while the server is offline and booted from the firmware disk. Unfortunately it can't be done remotely. It's a little misleading because the update is delivered as a "smart component" which usually can be deployed remotely. Here's the typical instructions for a drive update:

Installation
-------------------
Download this smart component and save it to a floppy disk.

Boot the server from a CD that contains version 1.1 (or later) of the ROM Update Utility such as SmartStart 6.2.

Run the ROM Update Utility

Follow the instructions found under the "Supplemental Disk" tab to install the update from the floppy disk.
This looks like a good spot to make a suggestion to HP about this issue. IM7 is able to remotely update System ROMs and Controller ROMs, but not for HDD. I was told by someone at HP that there's some controversy about the feasibility and advisability of doing this. I then suggested to this person that I would be happy if IM7 and VCRM could download all the firmware for their various hard drives and then create ONLY the bootable disks needed for the server in question. That would be a big help because 1) you'd know you have the right ones, and 2) you wouldn't have to deal with a dozen floppies or more.

What do you think HP?

Gary,

Heartily agree, I've got some HDs to update, as a result I've got to find 15 floppy disks. We just don't use 'em that much anymore, probably thrown hundreds away!

Being able to create the disk you want would be very useful.

I realize this is an old thread but this situation is similar to mine.

I have a ML370 G1 and I wish to upgrade the firmware of the ultra 3 disks. I can't boot Smart Start 6.x on this system so how do I execute ROM Update Utility?

Thanks

I'd need to check, but you should be able to boot from the first of the floppy disks created in the set and then do the updates from there.

That's how it seems to work for other offline ROM Updates.
