We have seen the Excessive.... error messages occur intermittently on ports when a link is established. So once in a while they'll turn up out of the blue, when two switches are connected, or a server is booted. But they only occur once, and then no more, so we haven't looked into it. Seems like it's just some hickup in the link establishment.

I'd go with the manual config, too. There's are sometimes subtle compatibility problems between switches from different makers, that prevent the auto-negotiation from working properly.

We've also seen that sometimes switches of other brands (Nortel, Bay) have failed to communicate properly with ProCurves after the other-brand switch has been rebooted. Ports have had to be shut down and reopenened to make it all work.

As for the trunk, a Cisco trunk is just a port that tags VLANS (ie. that bundles multiple VLANS on one link).

Hi

I believe you better check the Mini-GBIC in case you connect by fiber.

Also the following link will be helpful in your troubleshooting:

http://www.hp.com/rnd/library/troubleshoot_lan.htm

Good Luck !!!

You wouldn't find a miniGbic in a 2524 - especially not in port 1. We see the same thing from time to time between ports on certain gear - seems inevitable.

Just be sure you use the same duplex settings; AUTO/AUTO or 100Fdx/100Fdx. On Cisco you adjust duplex and speed in two steps.

/BT

Hi

Sometimes, manually configured ports can be less headache :)

Sorry for the Mini-GBIC, it should be transceiver.

Good Luck !!!

I try to force speed and duplex for solve the problem. I would do that this evening because I don't want to cut the production. (it is 11:00 am in France)

Thanks

If both ends have negotiated to the same duplex setting don't mess with it.

It seems a little odd that you would have a trunk configured on one end, but not the other.

Hi Rick

I had a similar problem before, a Cisco ISR 2800 series Router connected to 3500, both are on Auto, and the Cisco ethernet interface was showing Full duplex, and on the 3500 (k.12.05) was showing half duplex, and many drops happening.

So after setting it manually on both sides to 100-full everything back to normal.

Good Luck !!!
