for HP switches i don't think so, you can only do dynamic vlan assigning through radius if you want,.

for the normal setup you need to tag the port connected to the phone.

you can search in procurve website for application note and implementation between AVAYA and HP switches it will give you all the possible configuration.

Update the software on your Avaya phones and it will work. Earlier version had problems. You are right, that is the purpose of LLDP. The switch advertises via LLDP what VLAN ID is used for voice. The LLDP packet sent by the switch in untagged. The phone will read this packet, determine what vlan is used for voice and tag itself for that VLAN. After that, it will obtain an IP address on the tagged voice VLAN.
Assuming you have a 9600 phone:
2.7 works with this workaround:
# vlan <VID> voice
# vlan <VID> name "VOICE xxxx"
# vlan <VID> tagged <PORT-LIST>
# lldp config <PORT-LIST> dot1TlvEnable vlan-name

Version 2.9 works without the ...dot1TlvEnable.....
</PORT-LIST></PORT-LIST></VID></VID></VID>

You do that by specifying "voice" under the VLAN. When you do this, the switch will advertive this VLAN as the voice vlan in LLDP. But remember, earlier versions of Avaya software needed a special TLV. If you are running 2.9 or later, nothing special needs to be done, only "voice" under VLAN context.
