How can I check the type/product number/version for a mini-GBIC that is installed in a live production HP 4108 without removing the mini-GBIC (cutting off the live connections) ?

You can do a "show interface config" to see if it is an SX, LX, or LH mini-GBIC, but that's about it. The newer switches have incorporated a "show tranceivers" but the 4100's don't have that command since they're end of life.
