Try Everest Home Edition

http://www.lavalys.com/products/overview.php?pid=1〈=en

This cute little program will tell you a lot about your PC.

Also try to get into the BIOS Setup and see what ROM family you have.

The parts site

http://partsurfer.hp.com/cgi-bin/spi/main?sel_flg=partinfo&template=main&cpric=&psrchmode=&partsrch=400445-001&submit.x=11&submit.y=5

lists a bunch of different PCs using your modem part number. Looking up one of them the 1600s says you have a Lucent V.90 PCI Modem.
when i click on phone and modem in the controll panelit says"phone and modem control panel can not be opened. you may have a problem starting telephony service" also in the modem query where is says command not supported, i did a search on ggogle and it said it was related to the modem driver. also when i go to new connection wizard (windows xp)and try to make a new internet connection (setup manually) the "connect using a dial up modem" and the "connect using a broadband connection that requires a user name and password" are grayed out so i cant select the dial up option.j so any help you can give is GREATLY appreciated. thanks for all your help so far.

Gary,
first at all your modem is PSTN modem so you can't open ISDN connection neither broadband connection!
I guess your modem and your driver work fine; you can make the follow simple test :
1) Connect modem to phone line
2) Open HyperTerm and connect to modem
3) Issue follow command:
AT&FX3&W
OK
Command is A T Apersand F X 3 Apersand W without spaces
4) Now you can dial a know number, for example a mobile telephone typeing this command:
ATDT<MYNUMBER>
5) Called phone start ro ring

If test work, your problem is not driver but something else.

Antonio Vigliotti
</MYNUMBER>
