I have a Snap16 Networth hub. I wish to upgrade its software from 1.01 to 1.31 with a null modem cable. Everytime I attempt to send the .img file or the .mib file I get a 5 or so retry attempts and the thoroughput gradually slows to 0 bps. There are so many retry attempts sometimes that I get a 'Error limit exceeded' message. I am using the correct parity, speed, stop bits, etc. and vt100 terminal emulation. I am using the X modem protocol (tried regular and 1k), and the cable is good. I get these errors no matter which computer or terminal emulator I attempt to upload from. I noticed something rather odd. When I use ASCII as opposed to X modem everything appears to transfer fine. Of course once I reboot the hub it is clear that the upgrade didnt work. Help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Take a look at the reference guide (available from the user reference guide section of www.compaq.com/support/techpubs) - look at page 1-6 where it states dtr must be forced on for modem use - check these settings for your serial connection.

Try this below.. Snap 16 is the same thing as Netelligent 2016.

Based on 1.31 Code
Softpaq SP2671.EXE

Condition: Due to various factors, a customer's Series 2016 Repeater may have corrupted flash code
or a new version may be required.

STEP 1:
Flash Code Revision.
Direct the user to download the latest firmware from the Compaq Web Site.
Currently the latest is Version 1.31 & is Softpaq SP2671.EXE.
The file is a self-extracting executable that once unzipped will reveal several files, the Firmware image is file Nw16131r.img.

STEP 2:
You must clear out any existing code within the 2016 Repeater Hub. This can be done by sending a configuration file to the repeater through its management port. This file will have to be constructed by the customer using a text editor. The file is NOT downloadable from our Website. I suggest naming the file Nw16.cfg and below is what needs to be contained in the file.
All this file does is prepare the unit for the flash code file that follows it. See Below.
FV=NWV1.31
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;
;

STEP 3:
Use a terminal emulation program(any VT100/XMODEM compatible terminal application) to upload the Firmware Code to the 2016. 9600,N,8,1,No Flow Control
Power off the 2016 Repeater.
Power it back on and wait for the C to appear on the terminal screen.
Once the C appears on the bottom of the terminal screen, select binary file transfer and send the file Nw16.cfg as a binary XMODEM file transfer.
You need to be fast. It is best if the path to the file is already defined so all you have to do is double-click on the file after you select the send binary file option.
After the file is sent the user will see a series of alternating green leds on the front of the 2016. It could possibly turn amber.
Then send the Firmware image as a binary file via XMODEM, file Nw16131r.img
This file is 176k and will take a few minutes to transfer.
After the file is complete, you can wait for the 2016 to cycle itself or power it down manually and re-apply power.
After it completes post, the 2016 should be fully operational, and the power LED should stay Green.
Repeat steps, verifying setting if it fails.

I have tried many time to get my snap16 to accept the text configuration file. It accepts it just fine, but the second I add in a FV it rejects it (lights all flash orange, this is what the manual says it does when it rejects a configuration file). Ive used everything I can think of as a configuration file, but something like

FV=NWV1.31
;END

(and yes, i have tried sending the img file after this gets rejected, it wont work) As long as there is no FV, i can use any of the other configuration options just fine, is there something i have overlooked?

Well, i don't know if the original poster got his answer, but I was able to flash mine with this info. Except I did NOT reboot between the cfg file flash and the firmware flash. Now the hub is running 1.31 and shows up in Compaq Network Management Software. Yippie!
