How do I detect a failed disk on Linux with a 5300 controller?

Hi,

I am running Linux (RedHat Enterprise Linux AS v. 3) on a RX 2600 with a 5300 controller with a RAID 5 system.

How do I detect wether there is a failed disk (preferably without rebooting)?

Thomas,

get in touch with your local HP support, they should be able to provide you a HPmon daemon that checks every 5-minutes for any changes/failures on the SA53xx or SA64xx and log it in syslog. The daemon also rescans the scsi bus and as such kicks off a rebuild after a failed disk has been replaced.

It has not been public released (yet) but is available on demand.

If you use external disk enclosures like SW43xx or MSA30 then their is no need for this daemon to initiate the rebuild, it is only needed for internal disks in the RX2600 and other IPF systems.

You can also use the Insight Management agents for 64 bit Linux which monitor the system health.

syslog should provide you information on failed disk if any

Array utility if available can also be helpful to point out failed disk

My local support said he didn't know of any utility for monitoring disks on a 5300 controller that worked with RedHat Linux 3.0. He said he would continue to investigate.

Any more specific pointers?
