Shalom,

EFI is a DOS-like layer that helps the hardware talk to the operating system.

I hated it until recently, when I had to do a major infrastructure build and deal with vpar and hpvm builds on separate partition.

There is a logical flow to how it works and help screens to help you figure out what you want to do.

At this moment, I've broken away from this thread to set autoboot on EFI to boot a partition to vpmon instead of vmunix.

It takes some getting used to, and reminds me of bygone days of DOS, but is a useful little tool.

Take a look at a Windows 7 disk some day. You will see some EFI on that badboy, though microsoft for obvious reasons hides the interface from the end user.

SEP

Hi Ankit,

EFI or UEFI -Unified EFI as it is now called - is an Intel's Boot Manager innovation - and thereby seen in HP (Intel)Itanium architecture.

BCH - boot console handler - is its counterpart with the PA-RISC architecture with the HP 9000 server series

FFrom the Intel site:\http://www.intel.com/intelpress/articles/eshl2.htm
You would need to download

HTH
SNS

I might not have answered your second question because I did not see it.

EFI was introduced because HP stopped building PA-RISC systems, your traditional boot process systems.

HP stated they wanted to divert the R&D funds to develop new PA-RISC chips to other use. Intel produces very good chips and is a chip company.

So HP went with Itanium based servers and Intel technology.

There is a log of technology sharing with the good old PC and EFI is how Intel does it. When HP decided to migrate to Intel technology, they had to deal with the boot system that Intel provides. EFI.

SEP

It is NOT new in 11.31, it was there in any hp-ux newer than 11.11.

See

http://docs.hp.com/en/B2355-60130/hpux.efi.1M.html
