doubt - replace disk - HPUX Itanium

Good morning!

I need to replace two damaged disks from a HP RX2660. It's in RAID but I don't know exactly

which type of RAID. It's an HPUX 11.23 with 4 disks of 146GB. The disk I can see is at "sam"

is a logical volume with 279960MB.

Could you help with?

1) How can I see the type of RAID? I suppose it´s a RAID 5 with a hot spare disk.

2) Can I replace it with a used disk from another system?

Can i zero the used disk first at Linux with the command dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/xxx where /dev/xxx is the disk I want do use to replace the damaged one.

3) Is the command below the correct one to backup the operating system via network with all the installed products?

make_net_recovery -v -x inc_entire=/dev/vg00 -n 1 -s mmmmmm -a x.x.x.x:/area-backup/backup-hpux

4) I intend to backup, shutdown the machine replace one disk and simply turn on the machine . Then

I intend to shutdown and do the same procedure with the remaining damaged disk. Is it correct?

Hi,

Thank you for your help. Seems that I lost the spare disk and one disk of Raid 5...

Can I replace it with a HP disk with the same part number but different firmware? I found a used one that I intend

to zero with the command at Linux dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/xxx. Will it work?

Or,

Any disk with the same part number will work? Can I simply shutdown and replace the disk?

Do I need to replace first the spare disk or the damaged raid 5 disk?

Your data is highly at risk!

A spare disk with the same HP spare part # will work, no need to prepare the disk.

Just swap the disk in slot 8 first online, wait until the recovery has finished.

Then swap disk in slot 5 (spare). Finally shut down and replace the battery.

Hopy you have a good backup.

I executed for backup:

make_net_recovery -Av -x inc_entire=/dev/vg00 -x exclude=/dir1 -x exclude=/dir2 -s mmmmm -a h.h.h.h:/disk/backup-area

where: /dir1 = library that I want to exclude for backup /dir2 = library that I want to exclude for backup

mmmmmm = machine name h.h.h.h.h:/disk/backup-area = ip address and directory of network backup

It finished with the following warnings. Is the backup good for restore?

Can I use a disk with the same "Part Number / HP Model/ Firmware" without doing nothing (format with zero, etc) even if it is a "used" one coming from another server with for example AIX or maybe Windows system?

You can use a HDD that has the same spare part #.

Insert the disk while the system is up and running, so it does no matter what is on the drive.

Hi,

is the following command enough for the backup of the HPUX system and all HPUX related programs/utilities programs that was installed at this machine? I excluded at this command the backup of user application's directories and database.

Command:

make_net_recovery -Av -x inc_entire=/dev/vg00 -x exclude=/dir1 -x exclude=/dir2 -s mmmmm -a h.h.h.h:/disk/bkp-dir

where: mmmmmm = machine that I need to backup

h.h.h.h.h = ip address of the machine where the backup will be saved

It ended with warning of not finding /etc/resolv.conf and a test lvm area that is not used.

Hi,

Finally today, after receiving the disks, I replaced the disk from slot 5 first and then after rebuilding raid 5 (it took about an hour for 146GB disk), I replaced the one at slot 8 (it immediately got the status of spare).

I didn't shutdown the machine for replacing the battery. I don't have it yet - I need to find it.

disk in slot8 has data ?
