Can you upload the console screen copy when it boots with no error? I am curious to know what message has been logged normally after the lines below.

HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver v1.36 (0x1.24)
HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver: Discovery and Configuration of devices might take several minutes..............done

Does this problem happen with the system rebooting (i.e. shutdown -r)? Or will this happen only after the DC power cycling? If you cycle the AC input power, what happens?

I think your problem occured during he boot and before getting the EFI boot menu. Try disconnecting all external devices/cables one by one and check to see if any device is involved into your problem.

Have you check the system firmware revision? You can check it with the MP SR command.

Hi,

We recently installed two new RX4640's which on occasion hang during boot with the following messages:

-- 'SysROM:Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet Driver' returned Success
1 0 0x00020B 0x0000000000000006 EFI Launching Boot Manager
0 0 0x0015B2 0x0000000044709615 boot time event
HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver v1.36 (0x1.24)
HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver: Discovery and Configuration of devices might take several minutes.............done
HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver v1.36 (0x1.24)
HP XL2 Fibre Channel Driver: Discovery and Configuration of devices might take several minutes..............done
7 0 0x00006B 0x000000000000000B unexpected trap
7 0 0x000066 0x000000000000000B trap taken, number in ext PE
7 0 0x00003C 0x0000000000002C00 trap taken, offset in ext PE

This occurs on both servers. If the servers are powered of and on several times then they do finally boot.

Any ideas on what is causing the problem.

Ronnie

The suggestions to make sure you are up on all the right firmware versions is goodness. You can start from http://www.hp.com/ , follow the software and downloads link (IIRC) enter rx4640 and go from there.

Other sorts of troubleshooting things to consider:

*) does it boot ok reliably if you disconnect the fibres from the fibre cards? Perhaps discovery on that second fibre is getting something to make it cranky.

*) are the cards seated firmly?

*) does the system boot reliably if the fibre cards are inserted into other slots?
