Thanks for the info Bob,
But there is no patch and firmware available if the product reach end of life support right?
Actually we are thinking of either
1) maintain A500 machine by add on the disk n memory but end of life next year
2) Replace to new rx2620 server. Require the product end of life support for long term capacity planning.

Historically, EOL for HP server hardware (well at least HP 9000 and Integrity) is five years beyond last CPL (Corporate Price List) date. The rx2620 is still on the CPL.

I don't know that HP would have an exact date because I'm not sure when we've decided when to remove that system from the price list, and end of support is a delta off of last date on the CPL. probably a question for a real, live HP sales rep.

Fauziah,

The HP "End of Life" is generally not a reliable milepost on when to make the decision to upgrade or replace.

It is common for various upgrades to be available and viable for many systems, despite their being considered "End of Life" for new systems sales.

In my experience (25+ years), the question of upgrade/replace must be made at the time the capacity question arises, not earlier. The economics are the important issue, and that cannot be known until that moment.

An example. If a set of upgrades for an rx2620 costs $ 5,000, and the newer replacement system with many performance and capacity related improvements is available for $ 5,500, it is generally not the best decision to retain the rx2620 (the new machine will get you more than just the single performance/capacity upgrade).

If the new machine costs $ 25,000, it may pay to upgrade the rx2620, even though it is technically "End of Life".

Systems are generally supported long after their last available for sale date. "End of Life", meaning actual, explicit, de-support is often far, far later. In the OpenVMS world, the original VAX-11/780 was only de-supported fairly recently, over 20 years since its introduction.

- Bob Gezelter, http://www.rlgsc.com

Your sales rep or reseller should be able to give you the standard EOL discussion. The rx2620 will be on the CPL for at least a little while yet, and euros to berliners if it were to come-off the CPL tomorrow, the EOL date would be five years after that.

Once a system goes beyond the EOL date, it isn't as if it will suddenly go poof and stop functioning. I suspect that by the time you have a system reach the EOL date the SW at least would be very stable. The HW probably as stable although aging. And, while new OS revisions released after the EOL date may not "support" an EOL system, they do from time to time actually "work" on an EOL system, particularly if there are still "supported" systems using similar CECs and CPUs.

Given a choice, I would go with the rx2620 rather than continuing with the A500.
