I got an rx3600 recently - I can't seem to get things to work, unfortunately. What happens is:

I turn on the thing try to install hp-ux 11.23, but it can't find any disks (there are 7). So I assume I have to set them up in the RAID - following the installation guide I place the Diagnostic CD (IPF 0609) and boot the efi shell. The guide tells me to run drvcfg -s, which is supposed to start a 'GUI', but all I get is a list of language options; when I select one it returns to a command line saying:

'Drv[40] Ctrl[ALL] Lang[eng] - Options not set. Status = Unsupported'

Am I doing something wrong, or?

Are you sure you have a normal SAS HNA amd not a PCIe P400 RAID card?

Assuming you do have the SA HBA, have you followed the process described on p34 of this doc?

Once the RAID is set up, you need at least the 0609 install media. Previous versions don't know the controller.

Thanks guys - I'm sorry to say, I have no experiance with this hardware; I don't see anything called SAS HNA (or P400 for that matter) in either devices or drivers - the closest I get seems to be the 'Smart Array P600 Controller' in devices:

According to this matrix the P400 is supported for hp-ux, the p600 is supported for windows, not for hp-ux:

Really? According to the packing lists these machines were delivered with HP-UX 11.31 preinstalled (not that they show much sign of that). The same package list shows me that there should be an 'HP PCI/PCI-X SAS MPT Adapter'.

Apart from that - how do I even get close to trying to install an OS, when I can't even get drvcfg to work as expected? Ah well, I probably have to go and complain to the people who ordered the machines for us - only it will takes ages.

Several sites are talking about the P600 is supported only with windows or linux.

I would have thought that if HP-UX 11.31 were pre-installed that there would have been a boot option in there. Did/do you see that in the EFI menu?

As for p400 vs p600 etc, when you are booting, do you see anything like "Press F8 for the Smart Array Utility?" If so, try ESC and then 8 rather than F8. Also you should make sure your window is _25_ lines high - for some reason the Smart Array stuff is assuming a25 line screen. That messed me up for ages thinking that I couldn't delete a virtual disc when it was really that I couldn't see it telling me the option.

Another tidbit - if there is already at least one virtual/logical disc configured in the array, you should see an "f0" (and perhaps f1, f2 etc) when you tell the boot menu to put you into the EFI shell. You can try cd'ing to one or more of those and see if you can find the HP-UX pre-install there - assuming that the attempts with other stuff thusfar haven't wiped it.

Yes, you would have thought so, but I simply couldn't boot the preinstalled systems. On a wild guess I took all the drives out and reseated them in their sockets - and guess what: I can now boot the machines! End of problem - at least until such time when I need to reinstall, which will hopefully never occur, because I still can't get drvcfg to work.

FWIW I've always setup logical discs in the array via the EFI stuff.

Jan,

the 'drvcfg' only works for cards which have a EFI configurable driver in them, the SmartArray card is not such a card. The SmartArray card needs to be configured using the ORCA utility that can be accessed via F8 (ESC 8) at bootup time (or when you execute the EFI command 'reconnect -r' to reload the option roms in all cards)

The output you got from running the drvcfg and the keyb language choice is because the only configurable one it finds is the one listed here:

The [1D] corresponds to the USB keyb controller, you can match that from the drivers output you provided :

The complete 'drivers' output or 'drivers -b' to put a page break should list something like this for the RX3600 which has to run HP-UX :

running the command 'drvcfg 27 2a -s' (in my case) should start your config utility for the LSI SAS/raid controller ('HP PCI/PCI-X SAS MPT Adapter) which is the boot controller for HP-UX (unless you have a PCI-Express version) see below :

The 'drvcfg' command is intended to configure i.e. the lan cards, SCSI controllers, Fibre HBA's or the LSI logic SAS raid controller which is normally the core I/O card for HP-UX systems, the SmartArray P600 isn't supported on HP-UX as boot controller ... not sure what went wrong with your order, pls see :

Well that was certainly a thorough explanation, and I may have to have a look at it in some depth, because I now have a running system, it turns out that we can't really use this version of hp-ux, since DB2 doesn't want to install on it.
