>model is HP 9000

Minor point, you don't have a HP 9000. You have an Integrity server.

All HP-UX servers use a serial port as a console by default. From the HP-UX point-of-view, the integrated graphics card is just an optional extra which is not needed at all in normal operations.

Unix servers, HP-UX included, are designed to be operated remotely: local access is a special situation, to be used only with hardware maintenance or when the OS is seriously broken. The iLO subsystem allows you to use a web/ssh/telnet-based remote console even in these situations.

The integrated graphics card is included so that you can install and use Windows on your rx6600 server,if you wish. Current versions of Windows always require some sort of a local GUI display device.

You probably can make the graphics card somewhat useful on HP-UX by configuring an X server (using SAM), but its usefulness is quite limited: you cannot use the KVM for monitoring the HP-UX boot process, for example.

My recommendation: get an extra network cable for iLO, temporarily connect a laptop with a serial cable to the console interface of the server to configure the iLO network parameters, make sure the iLO works, and then forget the KVM entirely.

MK
