I've just upgraded to an rx2660. It is a brand new machine, two HDs using an internal SAS controller. I updated all the firmware, etc, and the machine itself appears to work fine.

I am now trying to install Server 2003 but the OS cannot find any disks to install on. I can't seem to specify any RAID controller drivers from setup either (no A: drive). I am trying to install using the Smart Setup CD which is downloadable from here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=3346456&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=3346452&swLang=13&taskId=135&swEnvOID=1060

The Smart Setup CD does see the RAID disk and is even able to partition it and copy files onto it.

I have a couple questions:

How do I configure the internal RAID controller in the system? I would prefer just RAID 1, and it may already be configured this way, but hard to tell.

Does configuring the RAID controller require HP-UX? I am trying to install Server 2003 right from the CD, and would prefer to avoid HP-UX for now.

How do I install Server 2003 and kick off Setup so that Server 2003 sees the RAID disk? Smart Setup does not seem to do the trick here, like it did in my rx5670.

Thanks!

What kind of sas controller do you have?

The rx2660 has a built-in controller, but linux and windows needs a optional smart array controller, e.g. P400/P600.

So I purchased a AD248A#540 but am still having problems. I installed the P400 as described on page 63 of http://docs.hp.com/en/AB419-9002C-ed5/AB419-9002C-ed5.pdf ... However, when reading this, I noticed on page 62, it implies yet another device is required:

PDF >> "Installing the SAS Smart Array and PCIe Expansion Boards"

PDF >> "The rx2660 server has two slots dedicated for the SAS Smart Array P400 controller and PCIe expansion boards. If you purchase the RAID option, you must install these boards on the system board. See for the slot locations on the system board."

Am I reading this correctly: in order to get the P400 to work I need to purchase this PCIe Expansion board?

If so, what part number is this? I didn't see this anywhere in the Quick Specs.

If this PCIe Expansion board is not required, I should have all the necessary hardware? If so, what more do I have to do in Smart Setup to get the RAID drivers working in Server 2003 Setup?

Thanks!

The slot for the P400 is always there - see also Figure 6-47 Removing and Replacing the System Board in your manual, upperleft corner).

You need to connect the SAS cables to the P400, start the server and configure the RAID.

For configuration see also

http://docs.hp.com/en/J6369-90075/ch03.html

Hi Torsten,

Thanks so much for the reply. I understand the private PCIe slot is always there for the P400, so why does the manual specifically say I "If you purchase the RAID option, you must install these boards on the system board" in the context of "Installing the SAS Smart Array and PCIe Expansion Boards"? Is the PCIe Expansion board required along side the P400? Also, I didn't get the battery with the P400 -- is this also required to get the P400 to work?

I have the two SAS cables which were connected from the two drives to the system board now plugged from the two drives to the P400. However, the controller does not appear to be discovered by the server still.

In EFI if I do:

fs0:\EFI\io_cards\smartarray> saupdate list

I get "No Smart Array controller detected!!!"

I have the P400 in its private slot with SAS cables connected to it and drives - and it still is not discovered by the server. I am led to believe it is because I don't have the PCIe Expansion board or the battern installed. Do I need either of these?

If not, what could the problem be? In EFI here are all the devices discovered:

Shell> devices
C T D
T Y C I
R P F A
L E G G #P #D #C Device Name
== = = = == == == =============================================================
10 R - - - 1 7 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)
11 R - - - 1 3 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,200)
12 R - - - 1 1 Acpi(HPQ0002,PNP0A08,300)
13 R - - - 1 - Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,600)
14 R - - - 1 1 Acpi(HPQ0002,PNP0A08,700)
19 D - - 1 - - Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|0)
1A D - - 1 - - Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|1)
1B B - - 1 1 1 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(1|2)
1C B - - 1 2 3 Usb Open Host Controller
1D B - - 1 2 2 Usb Open Host Controller
1E D - - 1 - - Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(2|2)
1F B - - 1 5 2 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(3|0)
21 D X X 1 2 - LSI Logic SAS Controller
22 B X X 1 1 1 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,200)/Pci(2|0)
23 B X X 1 1 1 Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,200)/Pci(2|1)
24 D - - 1 - - Acpi(HPQ0002,PNP0A08,300)/Pci(0|0)
25 D - - 1 - - Acpi(HPQ0002,PNP0A08,700)/Pci(0|0)
37 D - - 2 - - Primary Standard Error Device
38 D - - 4 - - Primary Console Input Device
39 D - - 2 - - Primary Console Output Device
3E B - - 1 1 1 16550 Serial UART
3F B - - 1 5 3 VT-100+ Serial Console
40 B X - 1 3 1 Generic Usb Keyboard
41 D - - 1 - - Acpi(HWP0002,PNP0A03,0)/Pci(2|0)/Usb(0, 1)
42 B X - 1 3 1 Generic Usb Keyboard
43 D - - 1 3 - Usb Bot Mass Storage
44 B - - 1 2 1 Generic Usb Mouse
63 D X X 1 3 - Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet (BCM5704)
64 D X X 1 3 - Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit Ethernet (BCM5704)

Any help appreciated!!
