I've never had any problem with warranty support over third party memory. Of course I've never had problems with the memory itself, either. I can imagine your HP CE might balk at replacing non-HP memory. In that case, you should be able to go back to the memory vendor and get a replacement that you'll probably have to install yourself.

Pete

Shalom,

HP will tell you this voids the warranty.

They may even refuse to service the system under certain circumstances.

However, many of my colleagues have used Kingston memory in their systems without any troubles.

So its up to you. Normally being firm with HP support will get them to service your system. They are likely to try and charge you if you bring them out to swap out one of the Kingston chips.

SEP

hi,

if you don't have any valid contract/service on the server so why not, but if you have, i will never do it, because of te warranty.

mikap

Depends on what you mean by "void my
warranty". Generally, HP doesn't warrant
components which it didn't sell you, but the
memory vendors tend to do what they say
they'll do in case of failure.

If you tell HP that your computer doesn't
work, then they might (reasonably) require
that you demonstrate the problem after you
remove the non-HP component(s). Evidence of
actual damage (charring, solder spatter, ...)
around the empty memory sockets might arouse
suspicion.

Reading the actual fine print in the warranty
might be more reliable than soliciting
opinions from people who can't see it.

My junk systems are not under warranty or
service contract, so I tend to use cheapest
flotsam I can find on Ebay. In the category
of registered ECC modules, the amount of
sub-standard, no-name junk seems to be
vanishingly small, and I haven't had any
trouble with any third-party memory in any of
my serious computers. (Who makes HP's memory
these days? HP? I doubt it.)

Item of note: you could have problems if you mix memory. We had the problem on a Lclass. We bough some addition Kingston ram for the box. Having both HP and kingston ram in the box did not work as they would not play nice together. Having only kingston or hp ram in the box worked fine.

So much for compatibility....
