Can we install MS 2008 on the RX4640 Server without smart setup disc ?
If so, how about the installation steps ?
Any sharing ?

Not sure if 2008 is supported, 2003 at least was.

Make sure you have the ia64 version, x86 and x64 don't work.

If you get the needed drivers from somewhere else, why not?

But why you don't want to use the smartsetup CD? It's on the web site!

BUT the smart setup media 7.0 NOT support RX4640 server machine ( because just tried today )....
Any other solution for the installation ?
MUST smart setup media for the installation ?

I don't know - just try.

If it doesn't work at all, think about virtual machines and windows as a guest system.

W2K8 is not supported on the rx4640 and for several of the I/O cards (like NIC, FC HBA's , SCSI cards..) there are no drivers anymore for W2K8.
So i would hold off with your idea of using this unsupported OS on that older server hardware.

Even if you get it to boot, by booting directly from the Windows 2008 CD/DVD you will have issue with other s/w utilities or management software which won't be available (or fail to install) on this server when it runs W2K8.

For servers that do support W2K8 or W2K3, yes you can boot from the Windows install CD/DVD without using the SmartSetup cd, it will require some more understanding of what is needed and what is happening during such install process. The Smartsetup cd is there just to assist/facilitate the OS installation by going through some logical steps one by one. However you must be sure the drivers for i.e. the bootcontroller are embedded in the image (slipstreamed) , if not you won't be able to boot. This is a general thing and not related to your issue here because the combination of server and OS version you want to try is not supported.

Both RHEL (starting at version 6.0) and WIndows -- starting with Win2k8 (probly SP2?) ceased to be supported on Itanic Platforms.

HP is all alone on the Itanium Platforms with HP-UX being the last Itanium Man Standing (of course there is still non-Stop OS and VMS)

Win2k8 R2 will be the last WIndows OS for the Itanium family. It could mean only on certain Montecitos (9100's) and Tukzilla (9300) systems though. The RX4640 is quite old -- so it may not be supported.
