SLOW File Copy

Hi There

I have the following server:
-ProLiant ML370T Xeon 3.06Ghz/512 533 1GB M1(G3) Server
-Smart Array 641 RAID Controller (1xUltra320, 64-bit PCI)
-Battery Backed Write Cache (BBWC) 64MB Enabler (SA641/642)
-3x 72 GB Pluggable Ultra320 10K Universal Hard Drive ( 1")configured as RAID 5

The server is installed with Windows Server 2003 Standard and split into a C: and D: partition.

I restored files to the D: drive and want to move/copy certain files and folders around.

My problem is that when I choose a chunk of data (various file sizes and DB's) to copy, it takes forever (longer than it took originally to backup - sometimes 2 or 3 times longer) just to copy to the C: drive.

This can't be right, but I have no idea had to fix it.

I would appreciate any help you could give me.

The only suggestions I can make are that you get all the fixes, etc. from www.windowsupdate.com and check for anything newer (than what you already have installed) at this web site (esp. Proliant Support Pack):

this only a good guess. Make sure, that d: isn`t too fragmented and full.

Some more wild guesses:
- Is your RAID 5 OK: one disk failure may slow everything down
- What is the processor load: if you copy to and from compressed folders, this needs more cpu than normal copy and if your CPU is allready charged.....?
- Do you have the same if you copy within the same logical volume D to D or C to C?
- Do you drag-and-drop or are you using a copy or xcopy command-line: command-line allways works a lot faster.
- Check your event-log and if nothing helpfull can be found, activate a maximum of auditing on your source and destination folder executing a test-copy and then recheck your event-log.

Now that we are with the wild questions:-)

What filter drivers have you installed. Here I am thinking about any 3 party drivers that would touch the kernel? Check your drivers directory or you can use the Microsoft MPS reports to anaylze your configuration.
