Hello!

I have a Windows 2003 server that after a reboot (updated a license file) does not want to boot up properly. It shows the Windows 2003 logo, and then reboots. I tried Safe Mode, Last Know Good Config, etc. I did get into a Recovery Shell by booting from the CD. As I am a HP-UX person, I don't know how to proceed. Machine is important. Please help.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Emil

first, what did you change? you mention a licenses file, is this a licesne database, or did out install a whole license server package?

if safe mode won't boot probably the fastest way back up is to restore the system state and winnt dir from tape.

assuming tapes are not available, you should consider booting the cd and going through the automated recovery process. this may or may not fix the issue.

keep us posted

You should try to refine problem first. I am usually using for this special CD kit called Wininternals Administrators Pack. You can boot from this and look at event logs, make some repairs, etc etc.
If this is not possible, reboot to recovery shell, run chkdsk with surface test option to confirm your HDD is OK, then try procedure called "upgrade in place" - look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;816579

You may loose some settings, but any data, databases, etc, should be accessible.
hope this helps,

Try booting from the 2003 CD and installing Windows again in a different directory. This will enable you to get to your data.
