Windows Server Sharing

Hi,

I recently reformatted a windows xp box and now it won't logon to our windows server 2003 shared folder. Every other computer I connect to the same shared folder on the 2003 box asks for a username/password. But on the newly reformatted computer it just says access denied and to contact the administrator of the server?

Any ideas of whats going on?

Is the server a Domain Controller? If yes, is the computer name part of the domain. Is the username you're using to logon to XP a Domain user? If the server is not a Domain Controller, is the username known to the server (under Computer Management/Local Users...) Sorry, I don't have any of my other computers running right now so I'm relying on memory.

The network is set up under a simple workgroup and the problem pc is under the same workgroup name. There is a user created on the server for the same name as the person logs in to xp, but the problem is I can't get a login prompt.

I'm figuring it's a problem with the actual xp computer and not the server since everyone elses computer is prompted for a username/password.

I just can't find any difference on the computers as to why one is denied and one is allowed to enter a password/username.

If you install XP with a single user account without a password and disable the Guest account, this can happen. See:

Try assigning a password to the account.
