Do you mean software RAID?...that is what LSM (Logical Storage Manager) of Tru64 provides.

Yes, you can use LSM.

True64 provide LSM (Logical Storage Manager), and it supports UFS , AdvFS ..

It supports RAID 0 , 1 , 0+1 , and RAID 5.

It is bundled with the Base OS kit. But, you require license to use it.

The LSM license is not required for all features of LSM. At least it is required for things like dxlsm and mirroring (probably any type of RAID).

using LSM without some form of RAID is like having a car without transmission ;-). Only a source for trouble but no use.

In the days when LSM was first introduced disks were less than 1 GB in size. In those days LSM could be used to create file systems and raw volumes that spanned multiple disks. That was certainly useful at the time.

What problem are you trying to solve?

Hardware controllers are very capable raid-5 managers. Why bother the OS with that menial task? Why turn a single system IO into 4 (read data, read checksum, write data, write checksum).

Now if you are talking raid-1, more commonly referred to as mirroring, then that is a whole different problem nicely solved with LSM plexes. There software/OS level raid-1 give the big advantage of potentially using multiple distint, redundant, paths.
